On 1 January 2017, Aldi Süd will become Germany's first major climate-neutral retailer, the company has announced.
Aldi Süd has invested a lot in modern technology over the last few years to reduce CO2 pollution and to optimize the efficiency of its stores and logistics. Up to 80% of the electricity it uses is produced by photovoltaics.
'The remaining power demand will be solely covered by certificated eco-electricity', said Floriam Kempf, head of energy-management at Aldi Süd.
Aldi is also engaging customers on the move - on its website, customers can design and customise their own virtual tree. For every virtual tree, Aldi Süd will plant one of 12,800 real trees in the west of Germany.
