The Campbell Soup Company has announced Diego Palmieri as the new vice president and chief marketing officer of its US Meals & Beverages unit.
Palmieri will take on the position as of 18 July. He had previously been general manager of SC Johnson China, where he was instrumental in building the company's e-commerce strategy, before joining the soup giant. He spent more than two decades with the company, in various positions.
Roberto Leopardi, the recently named president of Campbell's Meals & Beverages division, commented on the new VP's appointment in a release.
He said that Palmieri "is an accomplished marketer and experienced business leader with a track record of growing businesses through a deep understanding of brand value and success in building e-commerce into the marketing and sales mix". Leopardi also worked for a number of years at SC Johnson.
An Uphill Battle
After the sudden departure of Campbell's former CEO, Denise Morrison, in May, a loss of $393 million in the third quarter of its financial year and rumours of Kraft-Heinz buying the company, Palmieri comes into the position at a challenging time for Campbell.
Like Leopardi, he has pointed out that e-commerce could be a way to ensure future relevance of the brand, saying he is enthusiastic about "the opportunity to leverage new marketing strategies, including e-commerce, to ensure these brands continue to be part of our daily diet".
