Devonshire cheesemaker Mary Quicke MBE, producer of the cheese brand Quirke's, has received the award for 'Exceptional Contribution To Cheese' at the World Cheese Awards. The Quicke's owner collected her award at the World Cheese Awards ceremony, which took place this week.
Quicke's passion for her dairy herd and artisan cheesemaking methods has made her a leading authority on traditional cheese production. In 2005, she received an MBE for her contribution to farming and cheesemaking.
Whilst being renowned for creating artisan cheeses using methods that date back generations, the Quicke's brand, which recently underwent a rebrand, is also famed for its pioneering streak.
Quicke's produces eleven varieties of traditional clothbound cheeses, which have received numerous awards for their exceptional taste and quality - Quicke's received two gold medals and one bronze medal at this year's World Cheese Awards; the range includes Quicke's Vintage Clothbound Cheddar, Quicke's Oak Smoked Goat's Milk Cheese, a new gift box containing Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar and more.
According to the company, it had been nurturing the family farm at Newton St Cyres for almost five centuries. "Crafting magnificent flavours from the land is what we do, season after season: our artisanal cheesemakers use all their senses to discern the subtle shifts that mark out a good cheese from an exceptional one, creating a flavour only traditional clothbound cheddar can deliver."
Commenting on her 'Exceptional Contribution to Cheese' award, Mary Quicke said, "It is a real achievement to receive such an award! When you love what you do it never feels like work, and cheesemaking at Home Farm is what makes me tick. I am inextricably linked to the land and our herd; and creating beautiful cheeses is my passion.”
At this year's World Cheese competition, 2,727 cheeses from all over the world were judged by 250 experts to choose the award winners.
