New Yorkers can now recycle their Nespresso coffee capsules and other lightweight aluminium items through a new curbside programme in the city.
The programme will facilitate the recovery of Nespresso coffee capsules and other lightweight aluminium items from the same recycling bin where plastic, glass, and other materials are disposed of.
Guillaume Le Cunff, president and CEO of Nespresso USA, said, "We are constantly innovating to make recycling easier for Nespresso customers and to contribute new solutions to all recycling challenges, and we’re excited to help improve recovery in New York City and lessen the amount of all kinds of aluminium in our landfills today."
The Programme
The food giant has collaborated with the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), and Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR) to execute the programme.
The programme, aimed at supporting New York City’s Zero Waste initiative, has the potential to reduce 43,000 tonnes of aluminum foil and other mixed metals ending up in local landfills each year.
In most cities, articles such as foil and house keys are divided from other mixed metals using special equipment for recycling.
SMR has invested in new technology that allows better sorting and capturing of these articles, thereby increasing the efficiency of the city’s recycling system.
