The world’s largest food-maker has apologised after a post on Nestlé’s Twitter account likened its candy bar to recently massacred Mexican students.
The tweet, published on a Mexican account dedicated to the company’s Crunch candy bar, read, 'A los de Ayotzinapa les dieron Crunch,' a pun suggesting that missing students were ‘Crunched’.
Following the tweet, Mario Vera, vice-president of communications, told CNN Mexico that Nestlé was investigating the source of the comment.
Nestlé has apologised on its company website, saying that the tweet was "entirely contrary to the values of our company, and we deeply regret any distress it may have caused. We understand and share the public’s concern about this post. We take this matter extremely seriously. In addition to launching an internal enquiry, we have asked the police to investigate. We will take prompt and appropriate action once the facts of this matter are established,” the food company said in its statement.
