Nestlé has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that will see a regular supply of maize and other agricultural commodities developed in Ghana.
The food group said that it sees the partnership with USAID’s Agricultural Development and Value Chain Enhancement (ADVANCE) programme enabling it to work with 'smallholder farmers to further improve their agronomic and post-harvest management practices to meet the quality requirements of high-end industrial users’, according to a statement.
“We work to instil, spread and scale up the adoption of improved practices, with the ultimate aim of increasing incomes and adequate access to good-quality and safe food at all times,” said Freda Duplan, managing director of Nestlé Ghana.
The maize will be sourced as part of Nestlé’s Cereal Plan, which aims to enable farmers to produce better-quality grain that can be used both for its cereals and to feed local communities.
The objective of this partnership is to increase the quality of the overall grain supply in Ghana by training 113,000 farmers by 2018.
