Nestlé Removes Sodium Nitrite From Le Bon Paris Ham

Nestlé France will begin selling its ham brand 'Le Bon Paris' without the salty, anti-oxidising chemical E250 (sodium nitrite), Just-Food.com has reported.

The additive is often used to cure meats like pork, and impede the growth of botulism-causing bacteria.

The SKU, sold under its subsidiary Herta, is already available in some Carrefour hypermarkets, and a nationwide rollout is expected this year. It is available au torchon, steamed or smoked.

The way of producing the meat guarantees a sodium-nitrite-free product which also offers ‘total food safety,’ the food giant says.

If public feedback is sufficiently enthusiastic, Nestlé France could eliminate the additive in the production of bacon and hot dog-style sausages.
