Norwegian conglomerate Orkla has announced a 43.5% investment in Portuguese firm Asteriscos e Reticências, S.A, producer of fermented tea-based health drinks under the Captain Kombucha brand.
Captain Kombucha was established in 2016, and is headquarters in Lisbon. It is currently owned by its two founders (85%) and German venture capital firm Doehler Ventures (15%).
Following the completion of the transaction, the founders will retain an interest of 48.5%, and Doehler will reduce its ownership share to 7.9%. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

“In investing in the Captain Kombucha brand we are putting our money on a new and increasingly popular product," commented Orkla Foods International CEO Johan Wilhelmsson.
"The probiotics and organic acids it contains have a positive effect on gut health, which is one of Orkla’s priority areas."
Captain Kombucha posted turnover of €3.1 million in 2018, up from €0.9 million the previous year.
