Expoalimentaria, the most important food fair in Latin America, is underway in Peru and has transformed the place into the food capital of the world.
This year's event, scheduled from 25 - 27 September, has drawn national and international exporters, who seek to conduct business with more than 2,500 international buyers.
Buyers from the five continents expressed their interest in superfoods.
The national offer at the 11th Expoalimentaria includes, among others, avocados, grapes, blueberries, mangoes, asparagus, native potatoes, oregano, bananas, aguaymanto, dried pineapple, camu camu, turmeric, yacon, and aromatic herbs.
Companies from 18 countries have participated in this year's event.
These include Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, United States, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Portugal, Thailand, and Turkey.
Product Line Up
The product line up includes organic azaí purée, coconut water, crude peanut oil, ginger-flavoured breadsticks, dehydrated garlic, tequila, wafers of various flavours, organic agave syrup (millenary plant), avocado oil, balsamic vinegar, smoked pepper, marinated mushrooms in Italian flavour, and biodegradable dishes.
The first edition of the fair generated business amounting to US$25 million, and last year's edition generated US$ 800 million, setting high expectations for this year's edition.
Companies and associations from various regions in Peru have participated in the event, some with the support of their regional governments and others independently.
They have come from Lima, Ucayali, La Libertad, Ayacucho, Ica, Junín, Arequipa, Apurímac, San Martín, Áncash, Tacna, Lambayeque, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Piura and Cusco.
Contest Of Innovation And Thematic Halls
The event will also include the 10th Innovation Contest, which recognises businesses that develop innovative products.
A total of 14 companies have presented more than thirty products in the various categories for the contest.
Another highlight of the event is the Culinary Salon that focuses on conscious cooking and fusion cooking and promotes the use of Peruvian products in gastronomy.
On Thursday (26 September), the Pavilion of Cocoa and Peruvian Coffee for the world will be inaugurated. It will see the participation of Devida and allied institutions such as USAID, Technoserve and the Pisco Salon.
Local bartenders, convened by Conapisco, will prepare original cocktails using Peruvian fruits and herbs.
In the Tasting Room, there will be conferences with the best tasters and experts in the sector.
There will be a competition for the best stand along with a dedicated area for Food Trucks and Take & Go.
The keynote lectures, given by Peruvian and foreign specialists, will focus on three main areas: sustainability and fair trade, technology and innovation, and markets and trends.
