The Sweet Snacks category, which encompasses pastries, croissants and other related items achieved a turnover of €864 million across Italy’s grocery retail channels (hypermarkets, supermarkets, independent stores) in the first nine months of 2017, a study by IRI has found.
This represents a 0.5% drop on the same period in 2016, IRI said, while total volumes fell by 0.2%.
Leading sales for theSweet Snacks segment was the supermarket channel, which accounted for 68% of turnover and volume, growing by 0.7% over the past 12 months. At the same time, independent neighbourhood stores and especially hypermarkets registered declines in sales for the catgegory, more or less in line with other categories of packaged consumer goods.
Gluten-free and organic products still represent market niches within the category, accounting for between 1.0% and 1.5% of turnover and 0.5 and 0.7% of volume, the study found. However, these categories are growing in value by 15% to 16%.
