Unilever’s soap brand Lifebuoy and Vaccine Alliance Gavi have launched a three-year partnership to promote the combination of hand washing with soap and immunisation in India, where preventable diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia still claim 300,000 young lives every year.
Gavi is an international organisation that works to bring together partner public and private sectors to create access to new and underused vaccines in developing countries.
“Diarrhoea and pneumonia are two of the most devastating, preventable illnesses which claim the lives of millions of children worldwide. Integrated interventions ... including clean water and vaccines, can protect against these diseases”, said Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi.
Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever added, “By taking a holistic approach, promoting both hand washing with soap and immunisation, our partnership will help save further lives and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals." The Sustainable Development Goals include good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, and sustainable development.
The partnership was announced at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2017 in Davos, Switzerland.
