Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have issued a joint statement saying that they are removing plastic film from cucumbers sold at their stores from April.
The move will save the businesses around 120 tonnes of plastic per year, an Aldi Süd spokesperson said.
The retailers were able to make the move following adaptations to its transport processes, whereby product sourced in Spain can maintain freshness from their origin to the stores.
Transport Processes
“Together with our partners, we have now been able to adapt the transport processes in such a way that the quality and freshness of the cucumber remains unpackaged,” according to Aldi Nord corporate responsibility manager Rayk Mende.
Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd said that they are also testing reusable bags for fruit and vegetables sold in selected stores, on a trial basis.
The bags are washable and feature yellow and blue handles for ease of use by customers in-store – bags with blue handles are for sale, while those with yellow handles are for use within the store.
