Auchan is testing the sustainability of its convenience-store platform in Russia with the opening of four Kazhdy Den (which translates as 'Every Day') outlets, with a likelihood of further openings, themoscowtimes.com reports.
Up to now the French multinational only operated hypermarkets in Russia. As well as the Kazhdy Den openings, Auchan’s Russian subsidiary Atak is in the process of creating its own discount arm.
The Kazhdy Den branches will place a strong emphasis on private label.
The steps being taken by Auchan and Atak reflect the growing popularity of convenience retailing in Russia, with Da!, a domestic supermarket chain, and Metro Cash & Carry both increasing their presence in Russia.
