Danish drinks company Carlsberg has built a bar powered entirely by renewable energy, in the centre of Copenhagen.
The 'Zero Carbon Windmill Bar' is part of the company's 170 hours of celebration to marks its 170-year anniversary. It is powered by an integrated windmill, but also features a bicycle that customers can use to generate energy if there is no wind.
“We want to use our 170 year anniversary to celebrate the past and toast to the future," said group CEO Cees't Hart.
"Carlsberg has been brewing for a better today and tomorrow since 1847, and we felt the Zero Carbon Windmill Bar was a great way to celebrate this.”
Sustainability Programme
The bar is also a nod to the brewer's sustainability goals. In June, the company announced that it was committing to eliminating carbon emissions and halving water usage at its breweries by 2030 as part of its new sustainability programme, Together Towards Zero.
“After committing to 100% renewable electricity and zero carbon emissions at our breweries, we challenged ourselves to create a fully carbon-neutral beer bar," said Simon Boas Hoffmeyer, Carlsberg's sustainability director.
"Coming from Denmark, it only felt natural that we did this using windmills and bicycles.”
