Carrefour has announced that it has taken over 86 Billa supermarkets in Romania, acquiring the chain from its competitor, Rewe Group.
The supermarkets have a total sales area of 83,000 square metres and will, according to a statement from the group, become "the leading supermarket operator in Romania".
The French retailer opened its first hypermarket in Romania in 2001, and now operates 29 hypermarkets and 104 supermarkets there.
The deal, which is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities, is thought to be valued in the region of just under €100 million.
