Carrefour Italia has announced it will no longer sell eggs produced by hens raised in cages, in an effort to improve animal welfare.
As reported by the Ansa news agency, the change will involve all store formats of the French retailer in Italy (Market, Express, Iper, DocksMarket and Grossiper) and confirms an increasing attention to and awareness of the issue of animal welfare.
For some time now Carrefour has only offered free-range and organic eggs for its private label and wholesale egg lines.
With the latest decision, the retailer has now extended the initiative to all eggs sold in stores, thereby making its entire range of eggs fully sustainable and respectful of the quality of life of animals.
The use of cages in the rearing of laying hens, although permitted by law, is not considered by Carrefour a system in line with the quality standards of animal life as the small space, physical restraint and metal structures do not allow animals to move or behave naturally.
Other retailers such as Groupe Casino, Tesco UK, and Iceland Foods have also made commitments to eliminate battery eggs in recent months.
