Retail giant Carrefour Group has launched a global ‘Act for Food’ programme aimed at providing consumers with healthy food items at affordable prices.
Through the programme, the retailer will educate customers about its initiatives to tackle issues such as food safety, product origin and relationships with the agricultural community.
The move resonates with the transformation plan unveiled by Alexandre Bompard, and also with the group's vision to become a world leader in food transition.
Carrefour has also announced that it is setting up a food advisory committee, with Danone CEO Emmanuel Faber as a member, to boost sales of organic products.
Set Of Commitments
The programme will involve adhering to a set of commitments that are in line with new food challenges and also meet consumers' new expectations.
The company has drawn out a list of initiatives that will be implemented by the retail group in its France operations.
Some of these include transitioning to 100% French organic products in the fresh produce category of the Carrefour Bio brand, getting rid of 100 controversial substances in all Carrefour food products, reducing or removing the use of chemical pesticides in its plant product lines, and introducing a GMO-free diet for livestock used in the company’s product lines.
These guidelines will also be implemented internationally, but will be adapted to meet each country's specific requirements.
Online Presence
The supermarket giant has also set up a website to spread awareness about the programme. The site can be reached via www.carrefour.fr or directly at www.actforfood.fr.
Apart from details about the programme and forthcoming initiatives, the website also has an interactive section. Consumers have the option to vote for projects that they would like to see implemented.
Through this website, Carrefour aims to educate people transparently about a long-term change, and would like to use it to support consumers in their food choices.
