Carrefour Romania Takeover Of Billa Is Approved

Carrefour has received approval for the takeover of 86 Billa supermarkets in Romania, after the local competition authority gave the green light for the deal.

The takeover, announced in December, is thought to be valued in the region of just under €100 million. Carrefour acquired the chain from its competitor, Rewe Group.

"Spread over the entire Romanian territory, these stores, which will soon be operated under the Market banner, represent a total sales area of more than 83,000m²," said the retailer in a statement.

"Thanks to this acquisition, Carrefour becomes the leading supermarket operator in Romania and strengthens its multi-format presence in the country."

The French retailer opened its first hypermarket in Romania in 2001, and now operates 29 hypermarkets and 104 supermarkets there.
