French retail giant Carrefour has partnered with BNP Paribas bank to test a new mobile app to allow shoppers to pay for purchases with their mobile phones.
Customers will be able pay for purchases both at stores and online with the use of a pin and the app is also linked to their loyalty card accounts.
Carrefour and BNP Paribas said they developed the innovative technology last year. It is also being offered to other retailers.
The test mobile app Wa! can handle electronic payments, loyalty and coupon services. Tests will continue in the Ile-de-France area of Paris and at a number of stores this summer.
Speaking on the developments, Carrefour's chairman and CEO Georges Plassat, said: “We’re working to develop really useful services for our customers that will help us forge a closer relationship with them. We share with our partner BNP Paribas this determination to provide a new Customer Experience by harnessing the new technologies to create fun and social links.”
BNP Paribas CEO Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, said: “BNP Paribas and Carrefour are delighted to be able to offer the market this disruptive innovation, which is fully secure and based on customers’ new needs and expectations.”
