Carrefour Unveils 'Urban Agriculture' Initiative

French retailer Carrefour has unveiled a vegetable garden on the roof of its Villiers-en-Bière hypermarket in Seine-et-Marne.

The urban agriculture initiative features a selection of fruit and vegetable plants, which will be sold in-store once they have been grown.

The garden is managed by students from the Bougainville de Brie-Comte-Robert agricultural and horticultural school, who will also share information about the garden with the store's customers and local schools.

Local Distribution

The garden is one part of Carrefour's plan to sell fresh products from short distribution channels, which it says will reduce carbon emissions and food waste.

The retailer gives preference to local products, and produce made using agro-ecological methods such as on wind-powered farms and or without synthetic pesticides.
