Portuguese hypermarket chain Continente has launched an initiative to improve the nutritional value of its private-label products.
The retailer is working with the Portuguese Celiac Association, the Portuguese Diabetes Association and the Portuguese Cardiology Foundation to promote healthy eating and improve its own-brand food range.
Product Reformulation
As part of the initiative, Continente says that it is aiming to provide products with less sugar, fat and salt, as well as more products for consumers with specific nutritional or dietary needs.
Already, it has reformulated the recipes of 36 products under its private-label brand, including dairy, beverages, biscuits, desserts, jams and savoury snacks.
In addition, Continente is working on introducing a nutritional traffic-light system on its products’ packaging, to inform consumers of the amount of sugar, salt and fat therein.
Last month, the retailer announced plans to create space in its stores dedicated to healthy and organic products.
