Coop Netherlands Introduces Biodegradable Meat Packaging

Coop Netherlands has announced that it is introducing biodegradable packaging for all of the organic meat sold in its supermarkets.

The new packaging trays, which will replace the traditional plastic variety, are made from vegetable-based raw materials, namely dextrose and lactic acid, meaning that they are completely renewable.

The retailer says that more than one million packages per year can now be composted instead of going to landfill.

"By mid-October this year, we will replace all batches of organic meat with this biodegradable alternative," said Wim van den Burg, category manager at Coop Netherlands.

"Our challenge now is to inform our customers about the fact that the packages are really biodegradable," said van den Burg.
