Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced a new series of guidelines to maintain the health and safety of both shoppers and workers, as the coronavirus crisis in Spain shows no signs of abating.
The retailer has recommended that shoppers visit its stores alone (not with family or friends), plan their visit to stores around quiet times, make purchases quickly, and ay by card where possible.
Priority will be given to shoppers with reduced mobility, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and those working in the health service and social care personnel.
All Mercadona stores have introduced protective screens around the checkout areas, and provided additional hygiene equipment to workers both in its stores and warehouses, it said.
Disinfectant gels and papers have also been installed in each supermarket so that customers can clean the handle of shopping carts as they make their way around the store.
'At the moment, and in accordance with the exceptional situation in which the country is immersed, at Mercadona we are adopting these exceptional measures to collaborate and face this crisis,' the retailer said. 'We ask our clients for the maximum collaboration in the fulfillment of these measures.'
