Drinks company Diageo has announced plans to reopen the whisky distilleries of Brora and Port Ellen, following an investment of £35 million.
The company says that the decision to reopen these distilleries, which were closed in 1983, was mainly driven by the growing demand for single malt Scotch.
The two establishments will be reinstated in order to distil in controlled quantities, with a particular attention to detail, replicating the original spirit of the distilleries.
Whisky Crafting
“Port Ellen and Brora are names which have a uniquely powerful resonance with whisky-lovers around the world and the opportunity to bring these lost distilleries back to life is as rare and special as the spirit for which the distilleries are famous”, said Nick Morgan, Diageo’s head of whisky outreach
Cristina Diezhandino, global Scotch category director at the drinks company, added that the two distilleries will be "carefully crafting new whiskies to delight and inspire new generations of Scotch lovers around the world."
Brora and Port Ellen will be among Diageo’s smallest factories, producing around 800,000 litres of alcohol per year.
