Anheuser-Busch InBev is adding to its collection of craft beers with the purchase of London-based Camden Town Brewery, bringing in brands such as Hells Lager.
The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, will support Camden Town’s plan to build a second brewery in London and meet growing demand, Leuven, Belgium-based AB InBev said in a recent statement. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
Acknowledging a growing consumer preference for craft beer, the Budweiser maker has already acquired small brewers in the US, including Goose Island, Elysian Brewing and 10 Barrel Brewing. Camden Town has expanded rapidly since it started production in 2010, increasing its original three workers to 95 and selling 12 million pints this year.
“To keep up with the demand for our distinctive beers, we’ve had to look at expanding our brewing capacity and team,” Camden Town founder Jasper Cuppaidge said in the statement. AB InBev will help provide the investment needed for growth, he said.
AB InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, has agreed to buy SABMiller for about £73.1 billion ($109 billion).
