German discounters Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have unveiled a new wine range by German TV host Günther Jauch.
The range will offer a red and white wine – Günther Jauch Rot and Günther Jauch Weiss, respectively – and will be available from 19 March, at €5.99 a bottle.
Jauch is best known for being the host of Wer wird Millionär? (the German version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?).
His wines were unveiled at the ‘Meine Weinwelt’ ('My Wine World') pop-up store in Düsseldorf. They can be bought ahead of their launch date at the pop-up store and were tasted at the international ProWein trade fair from 16 to 20 March, according to Aldi.
High Praise
“My wine creations are a beautiful project at Aldi that we hope will delight many people,” said Jauch. “The new cuvées allow us to use the best quality from different grape varieties sourced from German growing areas. Together with my wine cellar master, Andreas Barth, we have developed two exclusive wines for a very special taste.”
Markus Del Monego, master of wine and Sommelier World Champion 1998, described the red wine as “pleasantly juicy, with fine acidity, velvety ripe tannins [...] shows cherry notes, hints of dark berries, and a hint of chocolate in the background”.
“The white wine convinces with a delicate, appealing fruit that subtly reminds [one] of ripe apricots, peach, juicy pear, green apple, lime and tangerine – a blend of fresh acidity and a balanced character,” Del Monego continued.
The discounters also expanded their wine range by adding a new Riesling from the vineyard WDP-Weingut Leitz, from the Rheingau region.
