The International Wine Challenge Merchant Awards has named Aldi 'Supermarket of the Year' at its awards ceremony in London, in which the retailer was up against stiff competition from high-end supermarkets like Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.
Aldi, the fifth-largest supermarket in the UK, with over 775 stores and more than 30,000 employees, received the award for 'its excellence in wine retailing over the last year', according to a press release by the company.
The managing director of buying at Aldi UK, Julie Ashfield, said, “Being recognised by the International Wine Challenge –not just for the quality of our wine range, but also for our UK buying team’s hard work – is a fantastic achievement. We have a concise range of wines on offer, meaning that each bottle, which is bought specifically for the UK market, is excellent quality and is sold at the best-possible price, truly earning its place on our shelves.”
Setting New Records This Year
This year, Aldi has launched a record amount of new wines, and more than 100 bottles have received international awards already.
This announcement, in particular, comes after the supermarket received several awards for its wine at the International Wine & Spirit Competition. The supermarket's best-selling Veuve Monsigny Champagne received a Silver Outstanding medal, while two other wines, the Frescobaldi Benefizio Riserva Chardonnay and the Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino, also received Silver Outstanding medals this year.
