Aldi UK revealed that its online wine portal sold more than two million bottles during its first year of activity, TheDrinksBusiness.com has reported.
The retailer, which at one point had to double its sales estimate for its online wine portfolio, says that its ‘Exquisite’ private label bottles helped it achieve its exponential rise, with its Spanish SKU Toro Loco Superior and its Argentinian Malbec amongst them.
Sparkling wines such as prosecco and champagne were also important in making the wine website a success, with the former encouraging a 15% rise in drink sales over the Christmas period.
Aldi boosted Londoners’ awareness of its wine offer by opening a pop-up wine shop in Shoreditch in May of last year.
