Auchan Italy has issued a recall on a protected-origin Amarone, which has been revealed to be a counterfeit, Blastingnews.com has reported.
The DOC Amarone della Valpolicella 2008 'Argento' wines were sold in high quantities during and around Black Friday, on 25 November. The SKUs have the serial number of EAN 80028936000644, though, as is standard with the high-grade Veneto wine, its label does not contain a best-by date.
The 750ml bottles were sold at €9 – an improbable price for such a wine, even on discount – and introducing them into Auchan’s supply chain around the time of Black Friday was designed to help this fact slip under the radar, as slashed prices abound in many different product categories for the event.
The knock-off wine, more a vino da tavola, BlastingNews.com says, was distributed by Naif Ingrossi, and bottled by Vini Valli Verona. Auchan is offering refunds or replacements of equal price.
Criminal investigations are ongoing.
