Danish drinks company Carlsberg has cast a copper time capsule filled with some of its most iconic brands into the foundation of its future head office in Valby, a district of Copenhagen.
On Tuesday, the group held a ‘topping-out’ ceremony, a tradition in the building industry, to mark the construction of its new headquarters in the Carlsberg City District.
Beer Bundle
A ‘greeting for the future’, the copper box was placed 15 metres below Valby Hill. Included in the time capsule are Carlsberg pilsner, Tuborg, Dali beer, Baltika No. 7, an alcohol-free Carlsberg Nordic, and three of the brewer’s specialty beers: Kronenbourg Blanc, Grimbergen, and an Original Dark Lager, based on an old recipe from the time of founder J.C. Jacobsen.
Finally, it features a Carlsberg 1883, brewed with the original unadulterated yeast created at the Carlsberg Research Laboratory that same year.
In addition to the selection of beers, the box contains a book of greetings from employees who will work at the new Valby site.
The group’s CFO, Heine Dalsgaard, laid the capsule in the ground before the topping-out ceremony.
"We put this time capsule in the ground because we are proud of our legacy, but also the brews we brew today, and all our employees who brew them," Dalsgaard said.
"Today’s traditional topping-out ceremony for our new headquarters – built on a solid foundation, now holding our greetings for the future – illustrates that we believe in the future, and that there is an even better day tomorrow for both Carlsberg and the world around us."
New Headquarters
The new head-office building will have four floors and 15,585 square metres of space. It will be inaugurated in the year 2020. In a milestone move, the Carlsberg Research Laboratory will now by physically connected to the head office through a 7,685-square-metre underground car park, which will be built 15 metres deep.
The first basement areas under Carlsberg were built in tandem with the original brewery in 1847, but were never previously connected.
The copper facade of the headquarters will be made from 50% recyclable copper, and the building will be fitted out with solar and green roofs, as part of the group’s sustainability programme, 'Together Towards ZERO'.
