In France, La Brasserie Castelain has launched the nation's first beer for large-scale distribution that is both organic and gluten-free.
The brewer's best-known beer, Jade, a blonde lager, was launched several years ago. It has followed this up with Jade Grenade, which contains a pomegrenate concentrate. Annick Castelain, the director general of the firm, said that it took eight months of tinkering with the recipe to finally achieve the optimum result.
“We decided to filter out the gluten in the final phase of the brewing process, and to use only ingredients from our own region [Pas-de-Calais]," Castelain commented.
"People with an intolerance to this particular protein are at a disadvantage sometimes, and we have decided to address that.”
