Hungary is looking at restrictions regarding the unit size of energy drinks, a ministry official said today.
According to Bence Rétvári, parliamentary state secretary at the Ministry of Human Resources, the government will strive to "make healthy choices available for the consumers."
The government official added that in line with the "Healthy Hungary 2014-2020" programme the cabinet will explore the possibility of following the Lithuanian example regarding energy drinks.
Last year, Lithuania became the first country in the world to ban the sale energy drinks to minors. Consequently, the World Health Organization praised the move by Lithuania and said it hoped for more countries would follow suit.
Answering a question by MP Lajos Oláh, Bence Rétvári today noted that the planned measures include "creating legislation to restrict the consumption of energy drinks," portfolio.hu reports. One of the ways to do it, he added, is to maximise the volumes of energy drink containers (cans or bottles) in trade.
Currently, energy drinks can be sold in all EU countries, but some countries have introduced regulations, including setting rules for sales to children. Hungary introduced a public health tax that includes energy drinks in 2012.
