Heineken has invested €1 million in its four factories in Spain, located in Madrid, Seville, Valencia and Jaén, with the specific goal of reducing water consumption in all plants.
In a statement released on World Water Day, March 22, Heineken said that as water is a main ingredient in beer, the protection of fresh water sources is one of the pillars of its sustainability strategy, A Toast For A Better World.
According Revistaaral.com, last year, Heineken reduced its water consumption significantly, which means that it now uses 6 per cent less water to produce each litre of beer. This equals a saving of 230,000 cubic metres of water in a year, the approximate volume of 92 Olympic pools.
Since 2007, Heinekene Spain has reduced its water consumption by 28.3 per cent. This latest investment will bring three phases of changes to its Spanish plants over a four year period.
The first phase will focus on consumption control, before moving on to reduction and optimisation of water usage, and then to the re-utilisation of water.
