Dutch retailer Jumbo has announced the addition of at least 200 new wine SKUs to its assortment. In total, the retailer now offers around 500 different wines.
Each store offers a different assortment of wines based on the preferences of customers in its immediate area.
Olaf de Boer, Jumbo's executive director of buying and merchandising, said, "We have had a new wine team for a year now and together we went looking for wines to further improve the quality-price ratio of our range. That led to the choice of 200 new wines."
The Launch
The new collection of wine was launched during a special event with the Netherlands’ wine sommelier of the year, Lendl Mijnhijmer.
Mijnhijmer tasted the new wines and listed six of his favourites.
These include Italy's Famiglia Bruno - Roero Arneis (2017); Australia's Trentham - Chardonnay (2017); Spain's Flor de Zalin - Red Jumilla (2017); New Zealand's Kuku Kuku - Pinot Noir (2016); Chile's Terra Pura Selection - Carmènere (2017); and California's Three Thieves - Cabernet Sauvignon (2016).
Three winemakers also shared stories behind the making of these wines. These include the wineries of TerraPura in Chile, Flor de Zalin in Spain and Trentham Estate in Australia.
Finding The Right Wine
The company has also added a new wine finder option in the Jumbo App to help customers search for a wine of their preference. The app asks users a number of questions and offers suggestions based on customer responses.
Several Jumbo supermarkets also plan to organise wine tastings for customers, as well as better equip store employees to advise customers.
The retail giant has also launched the ‘Jumbo Wine Weeks’ promotion, which will take place until 6 November 2018. All new wines will be offered with a 25% trial discount during this period.
