Lidl UK has augmented its wine offering with 15 Hungarian varieties, as the country grows in popularity as a producer across Europe.
In Hungary itself last year, Lidl sold twice as much indigenously-produced wine – 6.1 million bottles – as it did in 2015, according to Harpers.co.uk. Across its European divisions, the supermarket chain has forecast 2017’s sales of Hungarian wine will rise by 20% year-on-year.
Grand Tokaji
Collaborators with the discounter 'include large producers such as Grand Tokaji, and smaller boutique wineries such as Bolyki in Ege', according to Harpers.
A number of the Hungarian wines on offer in Lidl's UK stores fall below the £8 price point. The wines have already gone on sale in 670 Lidl outlets across Britain.
