The children of the late Philippine de Rothschild, the 'Baroness' of the wine industry, have declared that they intend to continue her formidable legacy.
The Rothschilds' reputation for top-class wine-making is easily among the strongest in the world. At a Sotheby's auction held in Hong Kong, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, his sister Camille, and brother Julien, spoke of their intention to walk in the family footsteps: Philippe, the new chairman of Mouton Rothchild, said "Our mother built a fantastic company and we don’t want to destroy what she has done. When you’re on top, staying up is very difficult. It takes a long time to build an image and five minutes to destroy it."
"The only thing I really hope with Mouton is it's a candle not a sparkler," his brother Julien added.
Château Mouton Rothschild, located in the village of Pauillac in the Médoc region, is one of the 'five great' Bordeaux estates. Its first-growths constitute some of the most expensive vintages available.
Its labels have been designed by figures such as Salvador Dalí, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Prince Charles, and others. It has featured in the writings of James Joyce and John Updike.
Philippine de Rothschild passed away in August of 2014.
