An Indian summer, coupled with strong demand globally, has meant that New Zealand has broken its own record for wine-exportation in 2014.
Sales of the new-world wine last year reached NZ$1.37 billion – the highest figure the nation as ever achieved, and an increase of 8.2 per cent on 2013. Trading, which has made wine the country's sixth-biggest export, was boosted by robust demand in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, which are traditionally the most fecund markets for New Zealand estates.
With another warm summer coming to a close, 2015's harvest is likely to be impressive also (though perhaps not quite as copious).
New Zealand Winegrowers' CEO, Philip Gregan, was quoted on Decanter.com as saying, “The warm, dry summer of 2015 has been absolutely perfect for growing and ripening grapes.
“As we move into autumn, the prospect is for an outstanding, albeit smaller, vintage in all our grape-growing regions.”
