Pilsner Urquell broke a 172-year-old record as over two million hectolitres of the famous Czech beer brand were sold last year.
Member of SABMiller Group, Plze?ský Prazdroj (better known by its German name Pilsner Urquell) is the leading producer and exporter of Czech beer. Last year, the brewery sold over 10 million hectolitres of beer in the Czech Republic and abroad, a 4.5 per cent increase from 2013, CEO of Plze?ský Prazdroj Paolo Lanzarotti said.
For the first time in 172 years, total domestic and foreign sales of premium lager Pilsner Urquell, the most famous Czech beer brand, surpassed the threshold of two million hectolitres. Brewed in the Czech town of Plze?, this is the original Pils beer from which all golden beers in the world are derived.
Pilsner Urquell CEO expects this year with a modest growth of the total domestic market. "I am absolutely convinced that beer still has strong growth potential, and I'm assuming that the last moderate growth continues," Paolo Lanzarotti said.
Czech annual per-capita consumption is the highest in the world.
Last year the brewery was able to open up new markets such as New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia and Serbia. "Our brands, especially Pilsner Urquell and Kozel, are highly competitive and can also perform on the German and British markets," Lanzarotti said.
Plze?ský Prazdroj is a member of the SABMiller plc, one of the largest brewing companies operating on all six continents.
