Lidl UK saw its sales of private label prosecco skyrocket by 79% in January versus the same month in 2016, driven by the popularity of its own brand version of the drink, according to Independent.co.uk.
Sales of Lidl’s own range of the Italian sparkling wine grew in spite of the abstention period of ‘dry January.’ The private label SKU retails at £4.99.
Across Europe, sales of prosecco, as well as cava, its Spanish counterpart, have been increasing, partially at the expense of champagne, according to predictive analytics firm IRI.
Furthermore, the UK’s indigenous production of sparkling wine continues as the industry seeks a 10-fold increase in exports of sparkling wine by 2020.
“Champagne and prosecco might have once been saved for celebrations, but with our range starting at under £5 they’ve become a very affordable luxury," commented buying director for the German chain’s UK arm, Paul Gibson.
