The most recent statistics show that Prosecco's surge in the United States (and globally) is continuing unabated.
More than 20 million cases of the sparkling wine are sold in the US each year now. This news comes, of course, much to the consternation of the Champagne region, and (perhaps to a lesser extent) cava-makers.
The champagne market in America is suffering as a byproduct of prosecco's burgeoning popularity. Research shows that in the country there is growing a culture of drinking the beverage casually, and not necessarily for celebratory purposes. This change, along with increasing quantities from New Zealand and Australia, have allowed it to dominate the market.
Juan Park, the research director of Wine Intelligence, said "The sparkling wine category is the star of global wine industry growth and the US is no exception. The move to more informal occasions away from formal celebrations is opening up a lot more opportunities for innovation."
