The governing body of Ribera del Duero has launched an appeal for its area's white wines to be eligible to carry the prestigious DO status.
The Spanish region is, in terms of wine-making, noted most often for its use of the Tempranillo grape varietal. The legislation as it stands is not conducive to white wines conveying the Denominaciones de Origen symbol, as many Tempranillos and other red wines of the locus do.
If what Ribera del Duero's council wants comes to pass, its Albillo, Pirules, Malvaisa, Viura, Verdejo, Albariño, Hondarrabi Zuri, Palomino, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Treixadura, and Viognier, could all be eligible for inclusion in the DO bracket.
Speaking to Decanter.com, Enrique Pascual, the chairman of the board, said "It is about opening new opportunities and options for producers.
"Our proposal contemplates allowing the production of white wine under DO label. The varieties of white grapes would be the same ones currently permitted in Castilla y Leon."
