Wines from the Rioja region in Spain, have achieved record sales during the first semester of 2016.
As reported by eleconomista.es, between January and June this year, 143 million litres of wine from Rioja were sold, which represented a growth of 2.81%.
An increase of 1.13% was recorded during the same period in 2015, compared to the first semester of 2014.
José Luis Lapuente, General Director of the Regulator Council of Rioja, said that he's aware that "it's a very sweet moment for the DO and, most importantly, wines with added value are advancing significantly".
He added that for the first time after the economic crisis, domestic sales grew more than exports (2.86% compared to 2.71%).
Rioja maintains the leadership among Spanish fine wines, and continues to have the biggest share of the market of DO wines, with exports to over 100 countries.
