UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's has predicted sparkling wine sales of over half a million bottles on Friday 23 December - dubbed 'Fizz Friday' by the retailer. This would equate to over five times the result on a regular Friday and exceed last year's sales on the same day.
Sainsburys recent study into festive trends, Christmas Uncorked, has found that sparkling wines, such as Prosecco are still growing in popularity as an alternative to Champagne.
However, Champagne is still favoured over other sparkling wines as a Christmas present by 50% of consumers, and 14% of consumers would prefer to serve Champagne at the start of a party.
Elizabeth Newman, head of Beers, Wines and Spirits at Sainsburys said, "Our Christmas Uncorked report is a fascinating insight into the nation’s evolving drinks preferences. Our thirst for fizz shows no sign of slowing and we’ve found that Christmas is the time our customers are most likely to spend a little more on that special bottle. With a wider choice of sparkling wine available than ever before, we expect Fizz Friday to be our best yet."
