The Brazilian cocktail, Caipirinha, has become a summer favourite for UK Olympic fans.
UK retailer, Waitrose, have reported that Leblon Cachaça, the newly launched spirit which is the main component of the South American cocktail, has outsold usual favourites Pernod and Sambuca.
The spirit was chosen exclusively for the summer, by Waitrose Spirits buyers, selected from a craft distillery which uses high quality pure sugarcane in its production.
The Latin American cocktail is made simply by pouring Leblon Cachaça over lime and sugar and garnishing with fresh lime.
Brazilian wine is also proving popular with consumers at Waitrose, with sales of Casa Valduga Leopoldina Merlot Cabernet, increasing by 54% compared to last summer.
Brazilian foods have also seen a popularity hike with Brazilian style steaks- picanha, proving a favourite with British customers.
Robert Hues, Waitrose Meat Buyer, says: "Rio fever has reached the UK with our customers having a real appetite for Brazilian food and drink. Since the opening last Friday we’ve seen a rise in sales of picanha- it's a cut packed full of flavour, which when roasted, retains its succulence.
“Typically cooked medium or rare, it's then sliced into juicy steaks and finished on the barbecue. Brazilians go light on their seasoning, preferring to appreciate the natural flavour of the meat, however it's delicious served with a little lime and chilli."
