British supermarket chain Waitrose has launched a new sweet English wine called Denbies Noble Harvest.
Expansion of the English winemaking scene has increased greatly in recent years, with summer sales of English and Welsh wine up 177 per cent at the supermarket compared to the year before.
With a 60 per cent market share, Waitrose has championed the development of local vineyards, and has its own vineyard in Leckford, Hampshire.
Speaking on the new launch, Waitrose English and Welsh wine buyer, Becky Hull MW, said, "This is a truly noteworthy moment in the history of English wine making. Not only are our sparkling wines winning taste tests across the world, but we’ve now reached the stage where we can produce a quality dessert wine which seemed impossible not that long ago."
With the advancing skills of national winemakers, the "possibilites" for the future of English and Welsh wine are incredibly exciting, she added.
Described as sweet with fresh citrus and honeyed pineapple flavours, the dessert wine is well matched to fruity desserts, according to the supermarket.
The Denbies Noble Harvest is available at WaitroseCellar.com and at a number of Waitrose shops.
