UK retailer Waitrose has reported a 'surge' in the popularity of Romanian wine, after sales increased by 17% compared to the year before.
The retailer has also reported growing sales for its private label ‘Blueprint Romanian Pinot Noir’, up 60% during that period.
Romania is the sixth largest wine-producing region in Europe and it is one of the fastest growing Eastern European countries at Waitrose, according to the retailer.
"Success Story"
“Romanian wine is a real success story and word is definitely getting around about how delicious it is,” said Waitrose wine buyer Victoria Mason.
“Savvy shoppers have been exploring wines from further afield, and Romania is producing some super wines that are exceptionally good value," she said. "We're very proud of our own label Pinot Noir, which is made by female winemaker Lorena Deanconu.”
Romania has a long history of winemaking, dating back more than 10,000 years. It makes more wine than many countries several times its size.
The country uses modern methods and well-known grape varieties to produce easy-drinking, excellent-value wines, in a similar manner to winemakers in Hungary.
