Yao Ming, the former Chinese basketball player and (more recently) wine-maker, is employing crowdfunding to boost the public profile and capital of his wine estate.
The athlete, who was the tallest player in the NBA up until his retirement five years ago, founded Yao Family Wines in 2011 in Napa Valley, the most prestigious region in the United States for viticulture.
Those who inject capital into his wine estate will be subject to a number of perks, such as an all-expenses-paid trip to the opening of his Shanghai tasting room (or to its Californian counterpart). Yao Family Wines, though all made in California, export in bulk to their maker's homeland in Asia.
The company hopes to raise $3 million, of which more than half has already been generated.
