German retailer Edeka Südwest has awarded €2,000 to the Streuobstwiesenretter organisation, which aims to preserve orchards in the Bergstrasse-Odenwald region of Germany.
Together with the NatureLife-International foundation, Edeka Südwest has launched an annual competition for projects that deal with conservation, creation, and restoration of habitats for wild animals and plants. The best projects are subsidised with up to €5,000, and so far over 60 regional projects have been supported since 2014.
With this investment, Edeka Südwest is looking to create a network that will continuously promote and improve the cultural landscape in south-west Germany.
About The Initiative
This project was triggered by the gradual decrease of orchards groves and the impending loss of regional fruit types. Members of the initiative have set themselves the task of saving existing traditional fruit varieties from extinction.
To achieve this, different types of fruit are identified and those worth preserving are replanted. The initiative aims to get young people and families with children interested in the project.
"This project is very important to us because we are committed to local food," said Michaela Meyer, head of sustainability at Edeka Südwest. "Public awareness and involvement is an important issue."
