In Issue 5, ESM: European Supermarket Magazine is thinking big. REALLY big. It's all eyes on Cologne, as we showcase the must-visit events and exhibitors at the world's largest food fair, Anuga, which takes place between October 7 and 11. We also profile the most-chosen brands from across Europe in our comprehensive Kantar Worldpanel 'Brand Footprint' report. In addition, we case our eye over the dynamic Meat & Poultry category, and explore the latest technologies in terms of EPoS and Warehouse Automation.

Anuga 2017 Preview

The world's biggest food fair has just got even bigger. Anuga (pictured above), taking place in Cologne from 7 to 11 October 2017, is expecting to welcome 160,000 visitors and more than 7,000 exhibitors this year, in an event that invites delegates to 'Taste The Future'. Comprising ten trade fairs in one, it's a major event in the retail calendar. With this in mind, ESM presents its largest Anuga preview yet, showcasing the must-see exhibitors and speaking to some of the key personnel that make this event the world's best. A must-read for anyone planning to attend Anuga 2017.

Kantar Worldpanel Brand Footprint Report

Kantar Worldpanel’s annual Brand Footprint report ranks the best of local and global brands through the use of an all-important metric: how often they are chosen by consumers. This year’s study is the biggest yet – covering 15,000 brands, 200 categories, 44 countries and five continents, representing 74% of the global population. In our Kantar Worldpanel Brand Footprint: Special Report, ESM will reveal the most-chosen brands in eleven European markets: France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Turkey and the UK – and also speak to leading industry experts about what these statistics tell us about the continent's shopping habits.

Meat & Poultry

The global processed meat market is due to hit the $1.5 trillion mark by 2022, growing at a CAGR of around 14.0% between 2017 and 2022. (source: Zion Market Research) However, at the same time, recent food industry scares such as the 'tainted meat' scandal in Brazil have placed extra emphasis on the quality and provenance of meat and poultry products available in the supply chain. At the same time, increased new product development in the sector is enabling suppliers to tap into consumer meal occasions with an ever-widening array of options. In this special report, ESM speaks to some of the most innovative meat and poultry product suppliers operating in the European retail space, examining new product innovations in this always-vibrant category. We also examine how retailer supply chains have adapted to ensure quality right up to the point of purchase.

Supply Chain: Warehouse Automation

Warehouse automation has been a hot topic within the supply chain industry for more than a decade – and the latest advancements in technology mean that it is now more affordable than ever to integrate automation into a retailer’s supply chain. However, at the same time, operators need to make sure they are making the ‘right kind’ of investment, and implementing automation solutions that will retain relevance in the future, in what is a rapidly-changing market. ESM profiles some of the leading warehouse automation solutions on the market.

Retail Technology – EPOS

The mobile- and socially-empowered consumer is now engaging with the retail format in new and exciting ways, blurring the boundaries between the traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ retailer and the online environment. This, in turn is leading to a reappraisal of in-store EPOS (electronic point of sale) solutions, which now need to offer a lot more than simple transactional operations. ESM speaks to leading retail tech suppliers and experts about how EPOS is adapting to the changing retail environment, and what the future holds for this essential sector.
