Spanish retailer Eroski has announced that 35% of its egg sales come from eggs produced by cage-free hens.
The Spanish cooperative has pledged that by 2024, 100% of the eggs sold in its stores will be from hens which are not raised in cages, as part of its Health and Sustainability Commitments.
Eroski works with its suppliers to advance the implementation of cage-free poultry farming in an ever-wider range of egg producers.
Responsible Consumption
"We are very committed to responsible consumption. In this sense, animal welfare is a relevant axis of work in the specifications that we require our suppliers for products of animal origin, especially for those of our own brands,” said the director of health and sustainability of Eroski, Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa.
“The certification of our value chain, which is a pioneer in the sector of our country, for the commercialisation of sustainable products is also evidence of our orientation in this regard. At Eroski we strive to offer consumers alternatives that allow them to practice a balanced and responsible diet, and that includes the eggs sold in our stores,” she added.
Currently, cage-free eggs sold in stores come from hens reared in the wild and fed with products from ecological crops (type 0), free-range chickens reared in the wild and with access to the outside (type 1) and chickens raised in restricted areas but with freedom of movement (type 2). These include those of Eroski's own-brand eggs, produced by chickens raised in alternative systems to cages.
The Spanish retailer recently announced it will extend its 'Contigo' ('with you'), business model, which aims to provide its customers with a more healthy and sustainable diet.
